Musco Lighting System Brings the Speed of Light to Night Racing at Sydney Motorsport Park

The Challenge

From F1-style open-wheeler racers, to motorcycles, to exotic supercars like Lamborghinis and Ferraris, Sydney Motorsport Park is equipped to accommodate some of the world’s fastest and most-photographed vehicles. SMSP is Sydney’s only permanent racetrack, and one of just two permanent race circuits in Australia that holds a FIA Grade 2 International License, and Motorcycle Australia National Track License. When circuit operators decided to celebrate the track’s 30th anniversary by adding night races to the schedule, they needed a lighting system designed for the facility’s signature blend of safety, style, and speed—allowing drivers on each of the track’s four circuit configurations to see clearly at speeds of 150 mph and look great in the process.

The Solution

The Australian Racing Drivers’ Club (ARDC), who operate Sydney Motorsport Park, chose Musco to install a custom lighting system featuring the company’s Total Light Control—TLC for LED™ technology, state-of-the-art infrastructure, color-changing fixtures, and Show-Light® Pro Venue special effects. More than 850 luminaires on 132 poles provide clear, uniform lighting, with a level of nighttime visibility that drivers say is equal or even superior to daytime light conditions. Spectators enjoy advanced lighting effects and custom-choreographed light shows along the main straight. The addition of night races helped the track to significantly increased its annual revenue, and Musco’s long-term parts and labor warranty eliminates maintenance concerns for a decade. Spill light and glare are minimized to avoid disrupting wildlife at nearby Western Sydney Parklands.
