Seaside High School Minimizes Spill Light and Glare along Pacific Coast Highway with Musco LED Sports Lighting

The Challenge

Located less than half a mile from California’s Monterey Bay, Seaside High School (SHS) has an ocean view and a tradition of athletic excellence. However, its football/soccer field was less than picturesque, featuring a mix of sand, dirt, and grass that provided poor footing for athletes. When a recent bond measure allowed SHS to renovate the field into a state-of-the-art stadium with a safer playing surface, project leaders also wanted to install the best possible LED sports lighting. The new system would need to not only light the field to the appropriate levels for safety and playability, but also prevent spill light and glare from affecting residents of nearby homes or drivers on the adjacent Pacific Coast Highway.

The Solution

Project leaders chose to equip the new Avila Gray Stadium with Musco’s Total Light Control – TLC for LED™ technology. Factory-aimed based on photometric designs created by Musco’s lighting application engineers, the system achieves the necessary light levels on the field while minimizing spill light and glare around the stadium thanks to patented fixture visoring. Show-Light® special effects allows the lights to be synced with music for thrilling light shows, and the Control-Link® service enables facility staff to operate and schedule the lights remotely via smartphone. Every part and all labor on the system is covered for 25 years by Musco’s parts and labor warranty.
