JMU Softball Prioritizes Playability and Fan Experience with LED Lighting Upgrade

The Challenge

With a record of conference championships and NCAA postseason success, the softball program at James Madison University attracts exceptional student-athletes and capacity crowds. In 2023, JMU Dukes Softball renovated its home stadium with modern amenities that would better position the facility to host high-profile events like the NCAA regionals. In addition to expanded seating, the university began searching for upgraded lighting that would meet broadcast requirements and enhance the player and fan experience.

The Solution

James Madison University selected Musco for a trouble-free lighting upgrade that would maximize visibility, comfort, and ballpark experience for players and fans. With Musco solutions in usage at every lighted athletic facility on JMU’s campus, the athletics staff trusted in the solution and service.

Better Visibility & Uniformity

Musco’s custom-designed Light-Structure System™ retrofitted TLC for LED® luminaires onto the stadium’s existing poles for a high-quality, cost-effective upgrade. The system is designed to produce higher light levels than the previous Musco HID system, delivering superior visibility and enhanced high-definition broadcast quality while minimizing glare.

Peak Fan Experience

Color-changing pole accents and Show-Light® Pro entertainment technology provide a variety of theatrical effects for a ballpark experience that’s among the best in the Sun Belt Conference.

Flexible Scheduling

The athletics team has established a trusted network of staff members with the freedom to schedule and operate the field lighting. Musco’s Control-Link® system gives users the flexibility to host impromptu recruiting visits, practices, and other special events.

Long-Term Partners

The lighting system at Veterans Memorial Park is covered by a long-term parts and labor warranty that eliminates maintenance costs and concerns until 2047.

Access for More Public Entities

Since 2018, the university has hosted a cooperative procurement contract that is available to colleges, schools, municipalities, and other public entities that may wish to utilize Musco’s lighting solutions for a wide variety of sports applications.

JMU has Musco lighting at each of our lighted outdoor athletic facilities as well as our basketball arena. We’ve had a great experience, not only with the quality of the lighting but with the customer service. From an operational perspective, from a maintenance perspective, the lights are something we never have to worry about.
