Mecklenburg County Satisfies Lighting Ordinance, Eliminates Concerns Over New Tennis Complex with Musco LED Technology

The Challenge

Mecklenburg County partnered with Queens University of Charlotte to build a state-of-the-art facility that would create a fun and safe environment for the community to play tennis. The Howard Lavine Tennis Center includes 13 competition-level courts that would each need lighting to allow community members and student-athletes to use the facility in the evening. With a lighting ordinance of zero footcandles at the facility’s property line and concern from neighbors over the potential impact of light from the facility, the city needed a proven system with superior light control capabilities. Additionally, with over 40 facilities to manage, the city wanted a system that could be easily operated and maintained.

The Solution

Musco was able to educate Mecklenburg County about its advanced fixture aiming and light control technology, which combines to minimize glare and wasted spill light. As a result, the county partnered with Musco and its Total Light Control – TLC for LED™ system. The system achieves the light levels needed for high-level competition and safer nighttime play while eliminating concerns for light spilling onto neighboring properties with its patented fixture visoring. Musco’s Control-Link® system enables instant remote operation of the lights with the touch of a smartphone and includes proactive 24/7 monitoring of the system’s performance. And, with its comprehensive parts and labor warranty, the county won’t pay any maintenance costs well into the future.
