Tottenham Hotspur F.C. Minimizes Light Pollution at Hotspur Way Training Centre with LED Sports Lighting from Musco
The Challenge
Tottenham Hotspur Football Club (F.C.) is one of the most storied franchises in the English Premier League and also committed to sustainability. The club built its new Hotspur Way Training Centre with the environment in mind, planting hundreds of trees and establishing a wetland on the property to enhance the area’s ecological habitat. When club leaders decided to upgrade the metal halide lighting on two of the Centre’s full-size pitches, they knew they needed an LED sports lighting system that would not only improve light levels on the playing area, but also protect the surrounding environment from glare, spill light, and sky glow. Controls that would save energy and add flexibility with dimming and instant on/off were also desired.
The Solution
Partners for 15 years, Musco is Tottenham’s “Official Field of Play Lighting Supplier” and has provided lighting at the club’s former ground White Hart Lane, as well as at the newly built Tottenham Hotspur Stadium. Musco and Tottenham also partnered to install two Mini-Pitch System™ modular sports solutions outside the club’s new stadium to serve as a community space and talent ID center. Having piloted Musco’s LED lighting on a small training pitch at Hotspur Way, the club called on Musco for a turnkey upgrade of two full-size pitches to TLC for LED® technology—a project that included installing new poles, crossarms, and fixtures that were all painted green to blend into the environment. The new system quadruples light levels on each full-size pitch, and backlights added to poles on one pitch also light an adjacent training pitch. Patented visoring technology minimizes spill light and glare, while instant on/off, dimming, and remote smartphone controls are enabled by the Control-Link® service. Every part and all labor on the system is covered for 10 years by Musco’s long-term warranty.
