Custom-Designed LED Systems Elevate Night Racing at Happy Valley and Sha Tin Racecourses

The Challenge

Hong Kong Jockey Club owns two historic horse tracks: Happy Valley Racecourse, a 30,000-seat venue located in one of Hong Kong’s most affluent and lively residential areas; and Sha Tin Racecourse, an 85,000-seat track neighboring the Shing Mun River. Located a short drive from one another, these sister tracks have a rich history and serve as modern – even futuristic – tourist destinations.

When the lighting on each track began to reach the end of its useful life, Club owners began searching for a lighting provider that could deliver common benefits for each project while adapting to the unique needs of each facility.

The Solution

After nearly two years of careful planning and coordination with the customer, general contractor, and consultant, Musco Lighting designed custom LED lighting systems that met the performance needs, installation timelines, and controls for each facility. Both projects benefit from elevated light levels, heightened uniformity, minimized spill and glare, and a budget-friendly retrofit approach that preserved all existing poles on.

The installation team completed work at Happy Valley during a planned two-month downtime on the track, while the larger-scale project at Sha Tin – involving the installation of more than 1,600 factory pre-aimed fixtures – was performed around the track’s busy schedule of practices and races.
Happy Valley incorporated Musco’s Show-Light® entertainment technology to provide spectators with advanced light shows – without creating spill and glare for neighbors in luxury high-rise apartments.
Both projects are backed by Musco’s 10-year parts and labor warranty for additional long-term cost savings and peace of mind.

The new lighting has significantly improved broadcast quality over our previous HID lights, and reduced kilowatt consumption at Happy Valley by 26 percent over the previous lighting. The Hong Kong Jockey Club wholeheartedly endorses Musco and we wouldn’t hesitate to partner with them again on future sports lighting projects.
