DarkSky International is an organization with more than 193,000 supporters, members, and advocates in over 70 countries. Established in 1988 as the International Dark-Sky Association, they provide leadership, tools, and resources that advocate for reducing light pollution through responsible outdoor lighting practices. DarkSky’s resources include best practice guidelines for Outdoor Sports Lighting and a two-phase certification process for facilities that adhere to those guidelines.

DarkSky Compliant Outdoor Sports Lighting

The Musco team has partnered with numerous facility owners to design projects that achieved Phase 1 approval and Phase 2 certification under the DarkSky Approved Outdoor Sports Lighting Program. Consistent with DarkSky standards, these projects incorporate features including custom optics, shielding, dimming controls, and timing controls to reduce energy usage, glare, and light pollution, while meeting visual needs for player safety and playability, class of play, and preferential color rendering for the viewing audience.
