Meydan Racecourse Sprints to the Finish with a State-of-the-Art LED Lighting System

The Challenge

Dubai Racing Club’s Meydan Racecourse is the world’s largest integrated horseracing facility, featuring a 1,750m dirt surface and a 2,400m turf course. With an array of world-class entertainment amenities and a luxurious 1.5-kilometer grandstand, the facility is home to the Dubai World Cup, an annual night of racing that features some of the biggest prize purses in the world.

When the track’s original lighting, installed by Musco in 2009, began to reach the end of its useful life, track owners looked for an upgraded system that could deliver heightened light levels, instant on/off capabilities, and energy savings, along with precise glare control and advanced entertainment effects that would elevate the race day experience for jockeys and guests.

The Solution

Working quickly during the track’s offseason (April to September), Musco installed a custom-designed lighting system that utilizes Total Light Control – TLC for LED™ technology. Each of the more than 2,225 fixtures is factory pre-aimed and field verified for precision light control, maintaining previous light levels and uniformity while using 800 fewer fixtures and reducing energy consumption by over 30%. With the new system in place, and the added peace of mind from Musco’s unmatched parts and labor warranty, Meydan can expect to save an estimated $11.8 million (USD) in energy, maintenance, and control costs over the next 10 years – including $4.7 million in energy savings. Musco’s Show-Light® technology integrates with the track’s DMX controls to facilitate sophisticated light shows, befitting the glamour of the world-class racecourse.
