Trinity Rail Prioritizes Safety with LED Lighting Upgrades at its Dallas-Ft. Worth Area Equipment Maintenance Facility
The Challenge
Trinity Railway Express (TRE) is a commuter railroad jointly operated by DART and Trinity Metro (Fort Worth). In 2022, Trinity found that inadequate light levels created a critical safety and security risk for personnel at their equipment maintenance facility. Trinity and DART partnered with NEMA 3 Electric to find a high-quality LED lighting system that could increase visibility along the tracks, walkways, parking lots, and other priority areas of the nearly 20-acre facility. It was also important the new system keep glare and light spill at a minimum, and that it be budget-friendly and reliable—like the railway itself, which serves about 1 million passengers each year.
The Solution
After a competitive bid process, project leaders chose Musco. Musco removed the inadequate lighting system—built with HID fixtures mounted on 40 aging, wooden poles—and replaced it with a custom-designed Total Light Control – TLC for LED™ system that accomplishes higher-quality, uniform lighting with just 12 galvanized steel poles. A facility that previously had intermittent patches of darkness now enjoys even light distribution, with significantly heightened visibility at railway switches and other critical safety locations. Every component of Musco’s foundation-to-poletop system is designed to work together for maximum performance and reliability. An industry-leading Constant 10™ product assurance and warranty program eliminates maintenance costs and guarantees light levels at the facility until 2033.
